| Lol you have a little acronym for order of operations. I've never seen that before. For trig, to learn sin, cos, and tan my teacher taught us SOHCAHTOA, and the story behind it is that there's a native american princess who stubs her toe on a triangle and the chief says "soh-cah-toa! soh-cah-toa!" (soak a toe). Now I'll never forget sin opposite hypotenuse, cos adjacent hypotenuse, and tan opposite adjacent. | |

Jando... stop being such a smart ass. Its more complicated than that. Dont make fun of me for failing algebra, and may I add in only by 4 points. It just makes you look like a jerk. The stuff I was failing on were things like this: You have $1,800. A portion is invested at 8% and a portion is invested at 12%. Your total return is $196. How much is invested at each rate? 7(-3x - 2) - (-x - 6) = -4(5x + 5) + 12 6(-8x - 3) - (-5x - 5) = -8(2x + 4) + 9 Solve the compound inequality and then graph the solution. Check graphically whether x = 2 is a solution. –5 < 3x – 2 < 10 A bus system charges $2.00 per ticket. Children 6 and under ride free, children over 6 but under 12 pay half fare, and seniors (those over 65) get a 25% discount. Write an inequality to describe y, the ages in years of all those eligible for some reduced fare. Those are just some random problems I googled that I remember having trouble with

| Angie, if you ever need help in algebra I can tutor you. I've tutored four kids in math, and one of them is over msn. I always struggled with algebra too... I didn't fail, but I had to stay after at least once a week. So let me know next term if you need anything. | |

I'm doing something similar to what you're doing but its never that hard, either you got hard questions or in advance math. It also might the fact that I use a graphic calculator which is one of those $200 ones that does everything.

I can also help you Angie if you need help with Maths.

| Im definitely not in advanced math nor ever will be lol. This is normal freshman math. And we cant even use calculators at all, they dont let us. They force us to remember the formulas for everything. And I guess judging by you guys, Mex and Aussie math classes sound a lot easier than American math. And thanks Helen, if I have trouble next year Ill try asking you for help o: But do you guys see now how I failed? (cough directed mostly at Alek/Jando) | |

Simple equations can be done in seconds rather then minutes with one. I feel sorry for you Angie.

| Well actually, in eighth grade (when i took the math class you are taking) We didn't use calculators either, we started using them in the 10th grade portion of the class. But we didn't have to memorize formulas because they realize in a real life application you will have access to the forumulas and memorizing them would be pointless. So with the EOCTs and stuff they gave us a formula sheet. It wasn't very useful, but they still gave us one. Louisiana is lame. | |

| Yeah, everyone here definitely agrees. The lafayette parish school board is pure retarded. They think their smart by throwing all the hard stuff at us, but they can never seem to answer the question "When will we ever need to memorize this in real life?" | |

| My junior year trig/precalc teacher wouldn't allow us to have calculators either, almost everything had to be done by hand. Not only that, but we were tested on formula derivations.. meaning, for example, you have to just memorize the quadratic formula, but for my class I had to memorize how mathematicians came up with the quadratic formula, which looks like this: - Spoiler:
Start with the quadratic equation. 1. ax^2+bx+c=0 2. x^2+(b/a)x+(c/a)=0 3. x^2+(b/a)x= -(c/a) 4. x^2 +(b/a)x+(b/2a)^2=-(c/a)+(b/2a)^2 5. (x+(b/2a))^2 = -(c/a) +(b/2a)^2 6. (x+(b/2a)^2 = -(c/a) + (b/2a)^2 7. x + (b/2a) = +-SQRT(-(c/a)+(b/2a)^2) 8. x = -b/2a +- SQRT (-(c/a)+(b/2a)^2) 9. x = (-b +- SQRT(-(c/a)+(b/2a)^2)*2a^2)/2a) 10. x= (-b +- SQRT(-4ac+b^2)/2a) 11. x= (-b +- SQRT(b^2-4ac)/2a)
I'm probably missing a few paranthesis, but you get the point. Too lazy to check it.
And we had to know one of those for nearly every formula we learned. It's not that hard to learn if you understand algebra well enough, but it made studying for the tests (especially the final) a huge hassle. That was the most intense math class I've ever taken, but I suppose it's my fault for taking honors. But yeah, talk about useless crap you'll never need to know...
