[EDIT by Angie: This thread can be for anyone that needs help on homework. Although, I have a feeling me and Dylan are going to be the only ones using it...]

Okay I am back on the forums at last. Part of it is because im in drastic need of help in Chemistry and well the other is because I haven't been on in awhile. Alek commented to one of my status on Facebook. Then it came to mind I should go on the forums more often again. I know everyone kinda out-grew Maplestory in a since, but hey we can stay in contact right? I was talking to Alek that we should make a MineCraft server and we all do that. I know Kish and Alek has an account for the game. We should make a page about Minecraft in the forums if we do end up in doing that.

Any who so here is my question that I have for this topic.

How on living earth do I CONVERT?? If I can get help on that question, I may be able to pass my converting test.... tomorrow and POSSIBLY... the hole year of Chemistry!

I asked Angie if she possibly knew how to do it and unfortunately she doesn't. So if I can learn it maybe she can too for next year! Anyway, early thanks if I can get "tutoring" on this topic.

P.S. Im jelly of your weather Kish >:

Hehe I like how our posts always have 2 different topics... heheheehehe

OT: What kind of convertions you need? @-@ That would help a lotz.

Yeah, convert is a huge generalization. Convert what to what? You mean like unit conversions? Or are we talking chemical equations?

Converting for Chemistry. As in units (Metrics into other metrics). All that stuff.. Like for example Meters to grams or Meters to ML and so on. Its driving me crazy.. lol

Meters to grams....?
Okay you got me there, I don't know waht kind of conversion method you are learning @-@

NOW SERIOUSLY, just go to youtube and search for some videos, I usually do that when I don't know something about my math homework or st00f

Well Conveting with these.. in order

Giga > mega > kilo > hecto > deci > centi > milli > Micro > nano.

If you can give me a reason i will be happy. lol
I never understood this, even since 8th grade. Sad
The reason why I dont google or youtube the stuff I have trouble with is because it always gives to much infomation of what i need or even to little. Also, it could be explained differently where I wont understand it and such.

Pretend the blanks are the main units, like meters, ML, grams, hertz, etc.
1 giga___ is 1000 mega___
1 mega___ is 1000 kilo___
1 kilo___ is 10 hecto___
1 hecto___ is 1000 deci___
1 deci___ is 10 centi___
1 centi___ is 10 milli___
1 milli___ is 1000 micro___
1 micro___ is 1000 nano___

examples:
5 gigawatts is 5000 megawatts
473000 milligrams is .473 kilograms
1 gigabyte is 1000000000000000000 nanobytes

Wordy explanation:
Just basically take whatever number you're converting and either multiply or divide by 1*10^x. The "x" symbolizes the conversion factor between two units. The conversion factor between centi and milli is 1, while the conversion factor between milli and micro is 3, and the conversion factor between mega and deci is 7. If you're going from a larger unit to a smaller one, use multiplication; if you're going from a smaller unit to a larger one, use division.

Hope this helps, even a small bit.

Recon gave a really good explanation actually, I don't have anything to add unless you're still having trouble. For me, I always just shift the decimal place either left or right, I never do any multiplication or division, although I know that helps some people understand what they're doing better.

Yup, Kevin summed it up pretty well Very Happy

Unless you are converting multiple units @-@ That's another story tht is really hard for me to explain in another language =P

Other topic: If we were going to set up an MC server, How would we host it? @-@

Yeah that was a good explanation. The whole 'conversion' concept is called Stoichiometry. Make sure if you are having trouble with something in chem. you figure out how to do it quick. Stoichiometry is really important and if you dont understand it early on you will get screwed later.

Helen how do you do the decimal verson with knowing whats what? Is the idea to remember the order of all the things i listed? I want to just get a nice graphing calculator that has all the converting fuctions.. like C to F type of stuff and meters.. basically all the converts. The only problem is the calculator is 130 dollars.. So im kinda screwed for the year if I cant grasp this..

Also, Kevin it did help a little I suppose. I dont understand were you were geting the numbers between the meters. like you said mili > nano is 3. how do you get that?

Right, it's just a memorization of the units in order and how much bigger they are in relation to one another. So using Kevin's chart, it's a matter of just counting zeroes, and then knowing which way to move the decimal place. For instance, if you're going to a bigger unit from a smaller the decimal moves to right, and from a smaller to a bigger unit to the left. Using Kevin's example:

5 gigawatts is 5000 megawatts
Because 1 giga is 1000 megawatts, there are three zeroes in 1000 so you'll move three decimal places.
Because you're going from a bigger unit to a smaller, you move you decimal three places to the left.

For the other example:
473000 milligrams is .473 kilograms
Because 1,000,000 milligrams is 1 kilogram (10*1000*10*10 to get the 1,000,000, using Kevin's chart) There are 6 zeroes in one million so you'll move the decimal point six places.
Because you're converting from smaller to bigger you move the decimal place 6 places to the right.

To answer your question about how Kevin got the conversion factor between milli and mico being three, again it's a matter of counting zeroes. Because 1 milli is 1000 micro, there are three zeroes, so the conversion factor is three. Same for the rest of his examples

I'm sorry if I didn't explain that right, that's just how I switch metric units in my head. I've explained it to other people before and they just prefer using multiplication and division, so it's just a matter of preference.
